Bagamoyo is located about 75kms north of Dar Es Salaam and was founded around the end of the 18th century by Arab settlers from Oman, although Arab settlement in the region dates back much further as there are Muslim ruins from the 13th century within 5km of the town. Bagamoyo was once the capital and administration centre, for German East Africa.
