If you ask me, there are too many people with far too much time on their hands who seem to just sit around and think up issues to complain about and matters to blow all out of proportion to their true importance. Just take the new Australia Day Lamb TV advertisement for an example. This advertisement which, following in the great Australian tradition of having a good laugh at ourselves and, absolutely, never taking ourselves seriously, has come under fire from some people who just don’t have a sense of humour, it would seem; a most un-Australian response indeed.
In the commercial, SBS newsreader Lee Lin Chin orders the start of Operation Boomerang where an elite special forces group sets out to rescue and extract Aussies from around the globe and bring them home for a lamb chop, on the barbie, on Australia Day. In one scene, when they burst into a room to rescue one Aussie, who then proclaims that he has turned vegan, the force them torches the room, as if to cleanse the area of the ‘vegan bug’; Just good clean fun, really.
However, a very small number of Australians, who have definitely had a sense-of-humour failure (or never had one to start with), have complained about the commercial because of the alleged ‘violence’ against vegans. Others have complained because the use of the name Operation Boomerang is offensive to Aboriginals. These people have even gone as far as to call for a ban on this commercial.
Come on, really??? Are these people so thin-skinned and so divorced from reality that they really find this advertisement offensive? Are these people so out of touch with the great Australian tradition of ‘taking the piss’ out of ourselves that they have to whinge and complain about this commercial? Are they so devoid of a sense of humour and a love of fun that they want to deprive real Australians of a bit of a laugh?
Fortunately, most Australians do not share their twisted and narrow-minded views and a poll by the Herald Sun, which asked whether readers liked the commercial or wanted it banned, showed around 82% liked, or loved, the commercial while only 11.5% want it banned (those were the figures when I voted in the poll. See: Herald Sun Poll – click here.).
What would I say to the 11.5% of people who want the commercial banned?……
……Please go and get yourself a life, find something meaningful to do with your spare time, rent some good comedy shows, buy some classic comedy books and learn a few jokes, while you are at it.
And what is my personal take on the new 2016 Australia Day lamb commercial? I absolutely loved it! …….(as if you couldn’t tell).
Political correctness has gone too far, why is it even a thing anyway? this is supposed to be a free country where we can express our thoughts and ideas freely.
These people want to censor everything they don’t like, they are just like the dictators of the world.
Perhaps if Vegans didn’t force their ideas on everyone else, maybe people wouldn’t make jokes about them.
