The Animal Justice Party and the Feral Cat

The Animal Justice Party has wacky ideas on how to control feral cats.

A cat ‘living free’ on Australia’s unique wildlife!

If you ask me, there are some ridiculous causes out there that are preying on the misplaced sensitivities of city dwellers and they are doing this through half-truths, misleading statements and even outright lies in order to push their self-serving ideologies. The animal liberation movement is just one such group who rely, for their own self-gratification or financial gain, on the ignorance of some members of our communities. One specific example is the Animal Justice Party of Australia.

The Animal Justice Party.

The Animal Justice Party are a group of animal liberationists who have, by some sick twist of fate, invaded the Australian political scene.

Amongst their nutty ramblings is this gem from just last week (September 2016). The Animal Justice MP, Mark Pearson, asked the Primary Industries Minister, Mr Niall Blair, if he would back research into the benefits of a trap, neuter and release program for feral cats. Mr Pearson described feral cats as ‘free-living” cats, as if that makes a difference to the damage that feral cats do. ‘Free-living’ cats must be a joke name, surely?

Trap, Neuter and Release

But seriously; trap, neuter and release? This might stop the cats from raping the native wildlife but the problem is that the cats are eating the native wildlife. Do these Animal Justice clowns not realize that?

Studies by scientists (not animal liberationists) have shown that each feral cat eats between 5 and 30 native animals/reptiles/birds (depending upon size) each and every day.

The CSIRO estimates that there are 15 million feral cats, and other researchers put the number much higher and nearer to 25 million.

That means a death toll, among our native animals, of at least 75 million native animals every day and it may be as high as 750 million EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Considering that cats can live up to 15 years, and studies of feral cats have confirmed that they can live for quite a long time, that is a huge number of native species that will have slid down the throat of these worthless and unwelcome, feline pests before the neutered pussy cats finally die of natural causes.

Can we really accept this huge loss of wildlife for the sake of the misplaced sensitivities of a handful of ignorant, urbanite, cat-lovers? There are many threatened species that just won’t survive that scenario and we will have more extinctions to add to our, already, tardy record.

The Costs.

And from a financial viewpoint – trap, neuter and release? Can you imagine the costs of such a program?

Ignoring the costs of trying to trap 15 million cats across the breadth of a country the size of Australia, what would be the costs of neutering these nuisance cats? Using the RSPCA’s own website, the quotes for neutering a cat range from around $115 through to $300, depending upon whether the cat is male or female. We are talking about billions of dollars to neuter the feral cat population.

Some of you might be thinking that the government only want to cull two million, so the costs of neutering would not be as high as I have claimed. However, what would be the point of neutering only a portion of the population and having the rest of the feral cat population breeding to replace those that were neutered?

Manpower

Further, to be able to trap and neuter cats quickly enough, to actually put a finite limit on the lifespan of the feral cat population, we would need thousands and thousands of trappers and vets working across the entire continent for years and years, if we were to have any hope of achieving a reasonable success rate – otherwise, the cats will simply out-breed the trapping program. Again, can you imagine the costs of this idea?

It is no wonder that the Minister didn’t even consider the ridiculous proposal of the Animal Justice Party. Even the most dull-witted individual can do the sums and realise that the proposal is just preposterous and totally unworkable.

The only workable solution is to cull as many feral cats as is possible and the government will need lots of help to achieve that. Fortunately, we have hundreds of thousands of licensed shooters who would do it for free. We only need the animal liberation brigade to wake up to the realities of conservation and for the anti-gun crowd to stop muddying the waters with their incessant untruths. The hunting community is a huge resource waiting to be fully utilized, let’s get the lies and misplaced emotions out of the discussion and save our wildlife.

As for the Animal Justice Party….. take a hike, please!

With millions of animals dying you’d think that the animal justice party would be concerned about that rather than the cats. I thought they cared about animals.
